I do not read Washington Post nor do I read New York Times. They are predictable and predictably one-sided. But, I came across this article from someone’s tweet and I read it. It is about Steve Bannon. I had blogged on his views on capitalism today. He has got it dead right. Hence, I read this.
This paragraph must strike a chord with those in India who saw the NDA lose the election in 2004. Of course, we do not know if the Trump family really thinks like this. If it does, it does not bode well for them. There has to be a better way:
Trump’s three oldest children — Donald Jr., Ivanka and Eric — and Kushner have been frustrated by the impression of chaos inside the White House and feel that their father has not always been served well by his senior staff, according to people with knowledge of their sentiments. The Trump heirs are interested in any changes that might help resuscitate the presidency and preserve the family’s name at a time when they are trying to expand the Trump Organization’s portfolio of hotels.
“The fundamental assessment is that if they want to win the White House in 2020, they’re not going to do it the way they did in 2016, because the family brand would not sustain the collateral damage,” said one well-connected Republican operative, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss the president’s family. “It would be so protectionist, nationalist and backward-looking that they’d only be able to build in Oklahoma City or the Ozarks.” [Link]
As I wrote earlier, I am not sure the Trump children think this way. But, something does not feel right about this paragraph. Protecting the family business portfolio cannot be achieved without a successful Presidency and a successful Presidency cannot be achieved by abandoning the base and reneging on promises. I can understand the consequences for an international chain of hotels if the President was blatantly anti-foreigner. But, there has to be a better and smarter middle way.
