It is the right thing that the Government of India has identified Railways as the most important Ministry and the most important link between rural and urban India. It is an important touchpoint in people’s lives – people from all walks of life. Whether an improvement in the performance and services of Indian Railways translates into votes is a different matter altogether. MINT has an interview with Suresh Prabhu, the Minister for Railways.
His response to the question on the tie-ups between Railways and State governments is sensible. Also, he is right to focus on making investments so that the loss of market share to Roads for freight handling is very important. The multiplier benefit of that will be huge – on fuel consumption, on traffic density and congestion, on pollution and health of truck drivers and cleaners and also that of others, etc. It needs to be followed through, pronto.
One gets the sense that we have the right man for the job, in this particular instance. Wish him all the best.
